Walks in the dunes and on the beach: adopt the right gestures

The dunes and beaches of La Manche offer unique and unspoilt landscapes, perfect for recharging your batteries. But these natural environments are also fragile and home to precious biodiversity. A few simple steps can help protect them while you enjoy your walk to the full.

Best practices for enjoying the sea while respecting nature.

Respecting the dunes

    • Keep to the marked paths
Dunes are fragile; their plants hold back sand and protect them from erosion. Walking off-path quickly damages them.
    • Do not pick vegetation
Oyats, Dogtooth, spurge and other plants bind the sand and provide shelter for rare insects.
    • Avoid climbing on the dunes
Their slopes are very sensitive to trampling, especially after rain. Walking in this area can have serious consequences for the eco-system.

Keeping things clean

    • Bring back all your rubbish
Take along a small plastic bag to keep ALL small items of rubbish, even small packaging and cigarette butts (especially cigarette butts during the summer months) … and of course dog mess!
    • Help collect rubbish
Pick up some rubbish found along the way: a small gesture, a big impact. There are tide bins at the entrances to the beaches, so you can leave any rubbish you find on your return.

Protecting wildlife

    • Respect nesting areas
Some beaches are home to nesting birds (terns, gravelots) that nest right on the sand. If signs or ribbons forbid passage, it’s for their own safety. So please do not displace their habitat or disturb them.
    • Don’t collect all the shells
They provide shelter and food for many species.
