Isolated lighthouse in a grassy landscape at sunsetAn isolated lighthouse stands in a grassy landscape. The sky is filled with dark clouds, but the horizon is illuminated by the last rays of the sun. The lighthouse, with its white tower and red lantern, is surrounded by low and dense vegetation.

The lighthouses of Coutances mer et bocage

Spotlight on: the lighthouses of Coutances mer et bocage

Lighthouses are emblematic symbols of the coast and the sea, used to guide ships through dangerous waters. In the Manche département of Normandy, these structures are numerous and rich in history. Our destination, nestling between the sea and the bocage, is the perfect place to discover some of the region’s lighthouses. These lighthouses are real jewels in the Channel’s maritime heritage and well worth a visit. They bear witness to the history of navigation in the region and bear witness to the beauty of the Normandy coast.

Sénéquet lighthouse at Blainville sur Mer

3.8km off the coast of Gouville-sur-Mer stands the Sénéquet lighthouse on the rock of the same name. White with a black-painted base, this lighthouse was built in 1857, initially without a light, in the form of a turret. It was then modified in 1858 to become a lighthouse and went into operation in 1861. At 17 metres high, the light is a fixed light with 3 flashes every 12 seconds. Like many lighthouses in France, it has been automated since 1981 and is an integral part of the Blainville-sur-Mer landscape.

Pointe d'Agon lighthouse at Agon-Coutainville

The Pointe d’Agon lighthouse, 9 metres high, is a 2-bolt light (one long and one short flash) located on the Pointe d’Agon about 1km from the pass to the south of the point. At the beginning of the 20th century, the lighthouse was only about 100 metres away from boats passing through the Havre de Regnébut as the headland expanded enormously, the lighthouse moved further out to sea. It was built in place of the old fort that defended the harbour but which was demolished by the tides in the 18th century. Over the years, the lighthouse has become the emblem of the seaside resort and a popular place to take a stroll.

The Ronquet lighthouse at Agon-Coutainville

The Ronquet turret is not a lighthouse in the strict sense of the word, but a marker light located off the Pointe d’Agon. 11 metres high, its purpose is to signal an isolated rock. Although it seems a long way from the coast (around 3 miles), the turret is accessible during very high tides, with a coefficient of more than 106 for those in the know.
