Story of "La Poulette"

Agon-Coutainville

History of La Poulette: we explain its origins!

Alongside the red-roofed lighthouse and the Pointe d’Agon, the Poulette beach hut in Agon-Coutainville is one of the seaside resort’s most emblematic landmarks. Loved by all, the eponymous beach is a veritable meeting place for many locals and holidaymakers alike. The pretty hut is often featured in photos, videos, articles and magazines promoting our destination, our region and La Manche.

The story of the hut is based on the history of the coast, the local weather and the onslaught of time.

Discover a few elements of its simple yet tumultuous story in our article below, as well as a photo gallery!

La poulette is a small beach hut located at the end of the sea wall in Agon-Coutainville. Set in the dunes, it is one of the vestiges of the era of bathing cabins and sea bathing.

Rescued many times from the sea’s assaults, it was built in 1926 and has since become one of the seaside resort’s must-sees: vacationers, walkers, photographers, painters, influencers, content creators… they all come here at one time or another to admire the landscape, take photos and draw inspiration from the place.

Situated on the front line, it faces the elements, the seasons and, above all, storms year after year. Some storms have had a greater impact on its history than others, almost destroying it (storms of ’99 and 2008), but its owners and a number of fortuitous events have kept it proudly in the dunes for all to enjoy. A great deal of work was carried out by the owners to ensure its longevity: riprap, sandbags, pilings….

At the end of the 70s, it was reinforced with cinder blocks to resist the elements. It was around this time that it was permanently closed to prevent damage. It remains here, alone, the last vestige of several other huts and houses that once stood here to welcome families on vacation, but the Poulette has become one of the emblems of the seaside resort of Agon-Coutainville, and we invite you to go and admire it for yourself!
